Surf Life Saving NSW has righted a 70 year wrong today, finally handing the bronze medallions to the women who patrolled Terrigal Beach during World War 2.

Thirty-five of the female pioneers stepped up to the task as the men fought abroad, with not a life lost in the ladies' four year watch.

Seven of the women are still alive, and at the ceremony to receive their awards in person from Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove.
